This is the extraordinary story of Chiquita, a courageous and dedicated canine companion who displayed unwavering courage in the face of danger to seek assistance for her injured owner. The story unfolded in Guapiles, Costa Rica, where Milagro Mᴜñoz Araya and her husband were driving near the veterinary hospital where she worked. Their attention was abruptly drawn to a small yellow puppy frantically darting back and forth in the middle of the road, dodging oncoming vehicles with remarkable agility.
Milagro recounted, “When I saw her anxiously darting from side to side, I sensed she was trying to convey something to us. So, my husband and I parked our car to comprehend the situation.”
They followed the distressed pup, who led them to a man lying on the ground with a walking cane beside him, clearly in distress. Without hesitation, they rushed to the injured man’s side, and the brave dog, now known as Chiquita, followed suit. She began licking her owner’s face incessantly, as if trying to comfort him. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, they immediately called for an ambulance.
Even as rain began to pour down, Chiquita refused to abandon her owner, standing resolutely by his side, offer ing unwavering support. When the ambulance arrived, paramedics gently lifted the injured man and placed him inside the vehicle. Chiquita, of course, hopped in as well. She climbed onto the medical bed, pressing against her owner’s chest. Although the paramedics initially allowed it, they had to remove her since transporting dogs in the ambulance was against regulations.
After the man was discharged from the hospital, Milagro learned where they lived and paid them a visit. To her dismay, their abode was the cramped confines of a van, a poignant reflection of their dire circumstances.
Chiquita, the brave and faithful furry hero, had a heart as colossal as they come. Milagro took it upon herself to assist Chiquita by bringing her to the clinic where she worked. There, the pup received vaccinations and a thorough cleaning, a gesture of kindness considering she spends most of her days on the streets. Comprehensive blood tests were also conducted to ensure Chiquita’s well-being.
Milagro emphasized, “I believe it’s crucial for people to hear about stories like this so that they become more attuned not only to the suffering of animals but also to their inherent goodness. They are often defenseless, yet possess enormous hearts and occasionally rely on our assistance. This should never be overlooked.”
